As someone who loves reading, little free libraries are like a dream come true for me. Although I love going to a regular sized library or the bookstore to browse for new books, there is something about little free libraries that always feels like Christmas morning because I never know what I will find inside the box. I really love to read, but I try not to be a hoarder. After I read a book, I ask myself if I will read it again. If not, I give it away.
About ten years ago, I joined BookCrossing as a way to motivate myself to declutter and get rid of some more books. I later discovered the Little Free Library website, which combined my love of reading with my love of giving away books. These miniature houses for books provide a safe, dry place to leave books for others!
Since I began actively hunting for these tiny houses full of treasures, I have realized that there is no single source listing all of the little libraries in Berkeley. The Little Free Library website has their own map but some library owners choose not to pay the $35 fee to be added to the official map. Other libraries are unaffiliated with the official Little Free Library organization entirely.
While I respect everyone’s choices, not being on the official map makes it a lot harder for people to find these renegade libraries! My sole intention here is to give people a resource that makes it easy to locate the little libraries in Berkeley and the surrounding areas (mostly Albany, El Cerrito, Kensington, Alameda, and Oakland). I have created a map as well as a list.
If you know about a little library that isn’t listed here, please feel free to contact me! I am always on the hunt for new little libraries so any tips about new ones are greatly appreciated.
